“I’ve enjoyed reading my great-grandmother’s essays very much. I sometimes wish that I could jump into the stories myself. I know that I’m only getting glimpses into a world that no longer exists, but so many of these stories feel like they take place in a time that makes more sense. It’s sad because I can’t think of a way to rebuild what [has been] lost until the whole thing comes tumbling down.”

Nick Price, January 2019.

These essays and letters are a narrative about people, as well as a history that sometimes connects events as much as 180 years apart. The story begins on September 22, 1901, in Santiago, Chile—the first day of Spring—and was interrupted on September 1, 2000, in Cleveland, OH, on the approach of Fall. Indeed, she departed with her glasses on, prepared to see the morning’s developments. Yet she no doubt knew she was embarking on the greatest journey of all.

Most of the essays presented here originally appeared in a bound book prepared for the immediate family. After Mary’s death, the content was published on the evolving websites before being changed to a blog format. That format is most suited to this material because the content is discrete essays written in random order. The essays cannot be easily sequenced into a chronology because the essays evolved over a long period of time and occasionally contain events recounted in multiple stories.

Most of my mother’s insightful stories about the more recent journeys of her life were not originally published to honor her request. Due to the passage of time, we now feel that this remaining material is important enough that we have decided to make it available on this website. The website is a membership website fully accessible only to its members. I feel she would be proud if these stories help others to understand their heritage and to grow in their own respective ways.
